THE UNIVERSITY: California State University, East Bay (CSUEB) is a comprehensive university serving the San Francisco Bay Area/Silicon Valley. It is known for award-winning programs, expert instruction, its diverse student body, and a choice of more than 100 career-focused fields of study. In its 2018 ratings, U.S. News & World reports awarded Cal State East Bay the highest diversity score of any university in the nation. The ten major buildings of the Hayward Hills campus, on 342 acres, contain over 150 classrooms and teaching laboratories, over 177 specialized instructional rooms, numerous computer labs and a library, which contains a collection of over one million items. The University also has campuses in Concord and Oakland, as well as Online. THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Sociology offers its diverse student population a rich array of courses in sociology, covering a wide range of social institutions, sociological perspectives, and methods of inquiry. Our faculty roster includes 8 tenure/tenure-track and 12 lecturer faculty. We offer a B.A. and a minor in Sociology. The Department of Sociology has over 650 majors, many of whom are the first in their family to earn a college degree.
DUTIES OF THE POSITION: We are seeking a specialist in one or more of three fields: Science and Technology, Religion, or Social Policy. The successful candidate will be interested in teaching primarily online and working with sociology faculty to strengthen our online teaching. The candidate will also annually teach either research methods or sociological theory. It is anticipated that although a significant share of teaching will be online, the faculty member will be required to spend a minimum of two days per week at the Hayward campus. In addition to teaching, the candidate will engage in major and career advising; departmental, college, and university service; and pursue an active research program. Please note that teaching assignments at CSUEB include courses at Hayward, Concord, and online campuses.
