Position Overview: I am a professor at Tulane University (learn about me at www.ilanahorwitz.com). I am seeking a graduate student in Economics or Sociology to assist with data analysis for a project on the socioeconomic trajectory of American Jews over the past 50-100 years. This position requires strong skills in analyzing data across multiple datasets. The ideal candidate will have an interest in social class, inequality, and mobility trends, with a focus on quantitative research.
Key Responsibilities:

Identify and explore relevant datasets (e.g., Pew data, NJPS, Census data) to analyze historical and contemporary socioeconomic trends among American Jews.

Combine and compare datasets with different structures and variables to draw meaningful conclusions.

Conduct analyses on income, wealth, education, and employment trends.

Create visualizations (e.g., income trend graphs) and generate analyses to explore questions around upward and downward mobility.

Opportunity to co-author papers that emerge from this research.
Qualifications:

Currently enrolled in a graduate program in Economics, Sociology, or a related field.

Strong quantitative research skills, including familiarity with data cleaning, merging, and statistical analysis.

Proficiency in software such as R, Python, or Stata, for data analysis.

Experience working with large datasets and a creative approach to finding and utilizing data.

Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.

Interest in topics related to social class, inequality, and mobility (knowledge of American Jewish studies is a plus but not required)
Compensation and Opportunities:

$30/hour, with an estimated time commitment of 5-10 hours/week starting Jan 2025
